Maryland Coach Brenda Frese Confronts Guard Oluchi Okananwa During NCAA Tournament Loss to North Carolina

Maryland Terrapins women's basketball coach Brenda Frese had a heated nose-to-nose exchange with guard Oluchi Okananwa during a second-round NCAA Tournament game against North Carolina on March 22, 2026, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.[1][2]

The confrontation occurred on the sideline in the third quarter after Okananwa committed a turnover, missed three free throws and missed a layup, prompting her substitution.[3] No. 5 seed Maryland lost 74-66 to No. 4 seed North Carolina at Dean E. Smith Student Center.[1][2][4]

Okananwa led Maryland with 21 points, six rebounds and two steals but recorded six turnovers.[3] She described the coaching style positively after the game, saying, "Coach understands I’m a competitor at heart... I love to be coached hard. That’s what she does with me every single day."[3]

Frese, who has coached Maryland since the 2002-03 season,[5] said, "I believe in you, but you got to want this moment."[3] She added that such moments stem from strong player relationships and are necessary to challenge elite competitors.[3]

Frese previously coached at Ball State (1989-96) and Minnesota (1999-02).[5] Okananwa transferred to Maryland from Duke ahead of the 2024-25 season.[6]
