Houston Sends Safety Jaylen Reed To Patriots For Receiver Boutte
The Houston Texans have agreed to acquire wide receiver Kayshon Boutte from the New England Patriots in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick, The Ringer reported Monday. The draft pick sent to New England originally belonged to the New Orleans Saints, according to NFL Network.
The trade fills an urgent need at receiver for Houston, which lost Jayden Higgins for the season after he tore his ACL during last week's joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders. Higgins had been ticketed for a starting role in the Texans' offense before the injury. Boutte, a 2023 draft pick, spent his first three seasons in New England, recording 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns last season in what amounted to a breakout year. He became expendable this offseason after the Patriots overhauled their receiver room, trading for A.J. Brown and signing Romeo Doubs to a lucrative deal - additions that joined DeMario "Pop" Douglas, Kyle Williams and Mack Hollins on the depth chart. Boutte's name surfaced in trade speculation throughout the offseason and into training camp, and he addressed the rumors last week, telling reporters he was "blocking out the noise" and staying focused on the present rather than "what's next or what's behind me."
New England, in turn, adds Reed to its secondary along with the extra draft compensation. For Houston, the move provides immediate reinforcement at receiver as the team looks to offset the loss of Higgins heading into the season.
