Woods Declines Ryder Cup Captaincy to Focus on Treatment

Tiger Woods informed the PGA of America on Wednesday that he will not serve as captain for the next Ryder Cup as he steps away from golf for inpatient treatment following a DUI arrest and car crash. Woods entered a not guilty plea to driving under the influence suspicion after his SUV struck a trailer and flipped on a residential road near his Jupiter Island, Florida, home last week. The PGA of America expressed full support for Woods prioritizing his health.

Woods posted a statement Tuesday night announcing his indefinite break to seek treatment. His attorney filed a motion Wednesday requesting permission to travel abroad for care, citing compromised privacy in the United States and his doctor's recommendation for comprehensive inpatient treatment. A Martin County judge approved the motion without disclosing the facility's location.

Woods previously sought inpatient treatment in Mississippi in January 2010 amid extramarital affairs and at another clinic after his 2017 DUI arrest. He declined the Ryder Cup captaincy offer last time in early summer 2024, citing time constraints, which led to Keegan Bradley's selection for the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black on New York's Long Island.

The PGA of America noted Woods shared his decision directly with them. Luke Donald has agreed to captain Europe for a third straight time ahead of the event Europe has won the past two editions.
